Cultural Space Harriague Winery
The vineyard of Pascual Harriague, located in the El Saladero area of Salto, used to cover 200 hectares and produced the wine Harriague wines, named in his honor. It is considered the breeding ground of the Tannat varietal, as it is the site where this grape and wine was first produced in 1887, following several earlier trials starting in the 1870s.
Thus was born a great wine, red, deep, and full-bodied, which first gained popularity among Uruguayans and later around the world.
Tannat is tailor-made to pair Uruguayan meat. The younger vines display livelier colors, with distinct violet and purple shades, and frank, fruity aromas. As aging progresses, the tannins soften, and the scents become more subtle and complex. It always offers a unique and unmistakable taste.
The cultural space, dedicated to preserving the Harriague industrial complex, frequently offers guided tours of the historical site by reservation in advance. It also features tastings, a wine boutique, and pairings with Basque cuisine.
Today, the international quality of Uruguayan Tannat is reflected in hundreds of medals from global competitions and more than 50 export destinations, inspiring many to explore the original story.
Thanks to the vine’s strong adaptation to Uruguayan soil, and according to recent research, the Tannat grape had arrived earlier through the Port of Montevideo and had been grown in vineyards south of the Río Negro. However, it was only thanks to Harriague’s efforts that the vine gained local and international recognition.

Casa Tannat
The secret of a wine lies in its terroir: the perfect combination of soil, climate, and human effort.
In northern Uruguay, sandy-textured soils prevail, with good aeration and deep rooting, which help reduce the risk of drought. These conditions, together with a humid climate, are ideal for grapevines.
Casa Tannat is a boutique project centered around Tannat wines, spread across 2 hectares. They describe themselves as the northernmost vineyard in Uruguay, located in the department of Artigas, just 5 kilometers from Brazil and 600 kilometers from both Montevideo and Porto Alegre.
The vineyard is nestled in a valley 200 meters above sea level and produces four wine lines: Tannat Icono 474, Tannat Reserva 717, Tannat sin barrica ¨[unoaked] 398, and Tannat Rosé.
Tours and Tastings
They offer a variety of tours including tastings, charcuterie boards, or even a main course, depending on the visitor’s preferences.

Leonardo Falcone Winery (Paysandú)
This winery is known for its high-quality varietals, especially French reds, with its signature wine being Tannat. It also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Marselan, Syrah, and Chardonnay.
The clay-limestone soils of Paysandú allow for a long vegetative cycle, which favors grape maturation and the artisanal production of its wines.
The winery’s winemaking tradition dates back to the Old World, with Domingo Falcone Ruggiero and his brother José, Italian immigrants from Corletto Perticara, Basilicata Province.
In 1886, they settled in Paysandú and acquired some land in Puntas de Curtiembre from the Uruguayan government. That estate, where the winery and historic family vineyard are still located, was named “Granja XX de Septiembre” [20th September Farm] after the Italian Unification of 1870.
Today, the fourth generation offers a range of tours tailored to visitors’ interests. It is recommended to inquire and book in advance.
