Playa Fomento, un oasis de paz
In addition to its rich heritage, Colonia also features a coastline along the River Plate. Fomento resort town stands out for its natural beauty and tranquility. It is ideal for enjoying with the whole family, where children can have fun in a safe environment whereas young people have access to entertainment.
Just 11 kilometers south of Colonia Valdense, it is easily accessible from kilometer 118 of Route 1, by traveling 10 kilometers south. This is the first beach along the eastern coastal chain of the Colonia department that visitors encounter, an area known as the “Coast of the Immigrant.”
The beach is known for its wide sandy stretch and calm waters of the River Plate, with small waves that often turn into gentle ripples. These conditions make it an ideal spot for children to enjoy safely, in a peaceful, family-friendly setting. Sport fishing is also popular here, along with water sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing. There is even a school where visitors can learn these activities.
At midday, Bo Fomento restaurant is the perfect stop after a morning at the beach or an intense walk or bike ride around the area.
On summer afternoons, it is common to find stands selling churros or tortas fritas, adding a delicious touch to the sunset. For young people, during the summer season, there are pubs and a dance club opening Thursday to Sunday, attracting people from all over Colonia and neighboring areas. This club is strategically located near the coast but far enough from residences so as not to disturb those seeking a quiet retreat.
Beyond the beach, Fomento offers other attractions. Waldensian Evangelical Church’s 17 de Febrero Park is a vacation spot just meters from the coast. It features a large wooded park with attractions for both children and teens, including a zipline, an obstacle course, and a soccer field. Club de los Pinos, located along the beach promenade, includes arcade machines, a ping pong table, a bocce court, a restaurant, and an ice cream shop. Every two weeks, volleyball tournaments are held here. Occasionally, movies are played in a parking lot with a giant screen, offering a drive-in cinema experience.
Very close by, to the east, is Britópolis, where visitors can rent jet skis, kayaks, and boats. In this area, you’ll also find Café del Bosque, a well-known event hall and dance club often hosting live bands, offering extra entertainment for visitors.
