Many of these ecosystems are priorities for the SNAP, given their restricted distribution in Uruguayan territory (rare ecosystems). The most outstanding component -due to its uniqueness- is the Cabo Polonio dune system, which constitutes the most extensive remnant of a sandy strip that formerly extended along our coast. It is one of the few areas of mobile dunes in the region, with areas that exceed 20 meters in height.

Cabo Polonio National Park is home to several priority species for the SNAP, including endangered or threatened species (such as Darwin's toad), plant and animal species with restricted distribution (such as the banana do mato, the four-eyed frog and the canaleta turtle) and migratory species of regional and global importance (such as terns, southern right whale and green turtle).

It also includes key sites for the annual cycle of crustaceans of commercial interest (such as pink shrimp, marine shrimp and sea prawns), and for the breeding and feeding of more than 47 species of fish (catshark, corvina, forkbeard, forkbeard, silverside). Almost half of Uruguay's sea lion and fur seal populations are located on its islands. Its areas are used for the reproduction and breeding of these species. The rocky area of the cape is home to the only continental settlement of fur seals in the country and offers a unique opportunity to observe these animals up close.

How to get there?

It is located on the Atlantic coast of the department of Rocha, at kilometer 264,500 of the National Route Nº 10. To enter there are several options, one of them is from the Terminal Puerta del Polonio, through all-terrain vehicles, you travel about 7 kilometers to the center of the town. Another option would be to do it on foot or on horseback. For the more adventurous, you can also enter from Barra de Valizas, on foot or on horseback.

More information about

Situación con respecto al SNAP Cabo Polonio National Park joined the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) in mid-2009. It is a coastal marine area of 25,820 hectares distributed in: terrestrial (4,653 hectares), marine (21,151 hectares in water mirror) and insular (16 hectares) ecosystems.

Valores culturales

Associated with the different environments in the area are a series of sites of great interest for the conservation of the nation's cultural heritage. From the archaeological point of view, Cabo Polonio and its surroundings were occupied by prehistoric societies approximately 11,000 years ago, until the arrival of European societies. From the historical point of view, the Buena Vista hill (highest point in the area) served as a boundary between the empires of Spain and Portugal between 1750 and 1777 according to the Treaty of Madrid.

The underwater archaeological heritage has not yet been studied and is of special interest because it is marked by numerous shipwrecks. The town of Cabo Polonio, where today about 70 people live, had its origin in the 19th century, around the exploitation of sea lions. Artisanal fishermen who used to come to the place to participate in the loberías zafrales -suspended since 1991- settled in places near the fishing plant. During the summer, a large number of temporary residents and visitors also settle there.

Website Turismo Rocha

Do not miss out!

Sand and sun

The resort has two beautiful beaches, the South Beach, with turbulent waters and a strip of sand that reaches up to La Pedrera; and the North Beach, which borders the resort up to Punta del Diablo.
