It stands out for its high degree of naturalness, the diversity of its environments and its role in the prevention and control of floods, the protection of the shores of the Uruguay River and as a breeding site for priority species for conservation and commercial value, where several ecosystems coexist: marshes, swamps, natural countryside, the forest and riparian scrub -generator of a biological corridor-. And the open woodland park with its associated carob and blanqueales, giving place to an important diversity of bird species, some of them -threatened at national and regional level-, as the dragon and three species of capuchins. The islands are also breeding and wintering grounds for Nearctic and neotropical migratory species, which has led to their recognition as a Ramsa site. Among the mammals, it is worth mentioning that this area is home to one of the two faithfully documented records of the aguará guazú, the largest native canid in danger of extinction.
A protected area between two historic towns

The National Park is developed between two populated centers, Nuevo Berlín to the south and San Javier to the north, this last one originated from an old colony of Russian immigrants that arrived in the country in 1913 and that, still today, conserves some of its traditions.

Nuevo Berlín is located 45 kilometers from Fray Bentos, accessed by National Route Nº 20.
