Among its outstanding events are the Fiesta Nacional de la Bandera and the Pericón Federal that takes place in December.

Canelones, as a department, stands out for being, after Montevideo, the most populated of the country and one of the most strategic from the geopolitical point of view. Located to the South of the country, it is the bridge of communication between the capital and the interior of the country, in addition to receiver of foreign visitors, being the seat of the International Airport of Carrasco. It has a surface of more than 4.500 square meters and a population that exceeds 520 thousand. Its territory, slightly undulated and full of plains, has a rich flow of streams that are part of the Santa Lucía river basin, source of drinking water wealth for the whole south of the country, which ends up flowing into the shores of the Río de la Plata. There are also some large lakes, tajamares or reservoirs and dug wells that store water during the winter for irrigation in summer. Canelones is also a fundamental department to understand the history of the country. According to the instructions given by the Gral. José Gervasio Artigas in 1816, Canelones would constitute one of the six jurisdictions with which the Oriental Province would be divided.

The city of Canelones houses important monuments and constructions that invite to enjoy the historical-cultural tourism. In the Park Gral. Artigas is the Archaeological Museum Antonio Taddei, who was one of the precursors of the scientific Archaeology in Uruguay. It exhibits paleontological and archeological material belonging to indigenous cultures that inhabited our territory. Another site not to be missed in the capital of the Canary Islands is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, built in 1843, with an architectural typology representative of Spanish Neoclassicism. The Villa Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was founded around the Chapel in honor of this virgin in 1783 and it was at the feet of the image that the first National Pavilion was blessed in 1829, created by the General Constituent and Legislative Assembly of the State.

In the 18 de Julio Square is the Monument to the Flag, inaugurated in 1939 and known as "La Joaquina", alluding to the portrait in relief of Joaquín Suárez that there is in its front. The figure wears the classic Greek tunic of the civic allegories of the time, holding a sword in her right hand and with her left hand she raises the national flag.

Don't miss out!

Politeama Cultural Complex

The Politeama Cultural Complex turned 100 years old and its name refers to the fact that this space has historically been used for different types of shows such as zarzuelas, theatrical performances, movies, dances and even boxing competitions.
