The homonymous department to which it belongs is the only one that borders with Brazil and Argentina.
With almost 12 thousand square meters it has a population of 79 thousand inhabitants according to the last census and a varied geography, with blades, hills and valleys. At the same time, it is the owner of seven islands with jungle vegetation, on the border with Argentina, which are part of the so-called missionary jungle.
Artigas is also a land of great cultural mixture, rich in diverse musical rhythms such as samba, polka, waltz, maxixa, habanera, chotis and milonga. The department is also rich in deposits of amethysts and agates, semi-precious stones that are carved in workshops in the city of Artigas, and are exported out of the country.
Uruguayan agates, together with those from India, are considered among the richest in the world. Therefore, it is impossible to resist the stone handicrafts of Artigas. Amethysts and agates seduce visitors who bargain for opportunities in the place of origin of these varieties of quartz. The department of Artigas can also be considered as the most guaraní of Uruguay. Its rivers such as the Cuaró (Cueva ocupada), the Ñaquiñá (Chicharra) or the Itacumbú (Piedra que estalla) are some of the examples. The influence of the Guarani language is also reflected in its flora and fauna.

Do not miss out!

Piedra Pintada

It is a striking and unique sandstone rock in the region, 19 meters high, located 17 kilometers from the city.
