Independence Square and Surroundings\r\nThe most iconic square in Montevideo marks the boundary between the colonial-era walled Old City and the open, modern New City. At its center stands the monument to national hero Jos\u00e9 Gervasio Artigas, beneath which lies his mausoleum. The square is surrounded by historic buildings such as Palacio Salvo, Palacio Est\u00e9vez, and Teatro Sol\u00eds, all worth visiting for their architectural and cultural value.\r\nTeatro Sol\u00eds, first opened in 1856, is the oldest theater in Uruguay and one of the most prestigious in Latin America. It offers guided tours and a wide range of artistic performances.\r\nAt one end of the square stands the Citadel Gate, one of the last remnants of Montevideo\u2019s original fort. Zabala Square\r\nInaugurated in 1890, Zabala Square is one of the most picturesque in the city, with its European landscape design and an equestrian statue of Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, founder of Montevideo.\r\nIts unique layout, rotated relative to the traditional street grid, reflects the Belle \u00c9poque spirit that once aimed to make Montevideo resemble Paris. This vision led to the creation of the Parks Department in 1889, which commissioned the project to French landscape architect <\/span>\u00c9douard <\/span><\/span>Andr\u00e9.\r\nOther elements add to its uniqueness, including a defined perimeter fence, winding paths bordering flower beds and grassy areas, and Gothic-style features like street lights, a drinking fountain, and an octagonal gate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Taranco Palace\r\nOnce the residence of the Ortiz de Taranco family, this building now houses the Museum of Decorative Arts, featuring a valuable collection of furniture, tapestry, classical archaeology, and artwork.\r\nIt was built in the early 20th century (1907) on the site of the city's first Comedy Theater. In 1943, it was donated to the state along with its art collection.\r\nThe building was designed by renowned French architects Charles-Louis Girault and Jules-L\u00e9on Chifflot, known for works such as the Petit Palais in Paris and the Arc de Triomphe in Brussels.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Birthplace of Artigas\r\nA site of great symbolic value, located where the Artigas family lived from their arrival in Montevideo Bay until the 1830s\u2014and where Jos\u00e9 Artigas was born.\r\nIt is now a space for exhibitions and educational outreach, offering insights not only into the life of Artigas but also into Montevideo\u2019s everyday life across nearly its entire urban history.\r\nIt also features a multifunctional space for small conferences or temporary exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Gaucho and Numismatics Museum\r\nThe perfect way to end your tour through Montevideo\u2019s oldest district. Through two collections, you\u2019ll explore the figure of the gaucho, from wanderer to national hero, and discover the evolution of Uruguay\u2019s currency. Over 600 items are on display.\r\nFive rooms are dedicated to the gaucho, tracing their origins, lifestyle, activities, customs, and clothing, with artifacts made from leather, wood, iron, and stone. The exhibit follows the gaucho\u2019s transformation, highlighting their role as a soldier in national struggles from 1811 to 1904, following and backing political leaders and wearing either white or red party badges.\r\nIn the former bank vaults, you'll find a numismatic journey from colonial times to the founding of the National Bank in 1896, Uruguay\u2019s first state bank.\r\nOn display are Portuguese and Spanish colonial coins, including ones recovered from the 1752 shipwreck of the <\/span>Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Luz<\/i><\/span>, as well as Uruguay\u2019s earliest coins, such as the <\/span>Peso del Sitio<\/i><\/span>, the first silver coin minted during the Siege of Montevideo in 1844. It was declared a Historic Heritage item in 2019. The paper currency exhibit features bills from early exchange houses and private banks, ending with a bill issued by the National Bank in 1896.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Existen adem\u00e1s algunos lagos de gran tama\u00f1o, tajamares o embalses y pozos excavados que almacenan agua durante el invierno para el riego en verano. Canelones es adem\u00e1s, un departamento fundamental para comprender la historia del pa\u00eds. De acuerdo a las instrucciones dadas por el Gral. Jos\u00e9 Gervasio Artigas en 1816, Canelones constituir\u00eda una de las seis jurisdicciones con que se dividir\u00eda la Provincia Oriental.\\r\\n\\r\\nLa ciudad de Canelones alberga importantes monumentos y construcciones que invitan a disfrutar del turismo hist\u00f3rico-cultural.\u00a0En el Parque Gral. Artigas se encuentra el Museo Arqueol\u00f3gico Antonio Taddei, quien fuera uno de los precursores de la Arqueolog\u00eda cient\u00edfica en Uruguay. Exhibe material paleontol\u00f3gico y fundamentalmente arqueol\u00f3gico pertenecientes a culturas ind\u00edgenas que habitaron nuestro territorio. Otro sitio imperdible de la capital canaria es la Catedral Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe, construida en 1843, con una tipolog\u00eda arquitect\u00f3nica representativa del Neoclacisimo espa\u00f1ol. En torno a la Capilla en honor a esta virgen se fund\u00f3 la Villa Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe en 1783 y fue a los pies de la imagen que se bendijo en 1829 al primer Pabell\u00f3n Nacional, creado por la Asamblea General Constituyente y Legislativa del Estado.\\r\\n\\r\\nEn la plaza 18 de Julio est\u00e1 el Monumento a la Bandera, inaugurado en 1939 y conocido como \u201cLa Joaquina\u201d, aludiendo al retrato en relieve de Joaqu\u00edn Su\u00e1rez que hay en su frente. La figura luce la cl\u00e1sica t\u00fanica griega de las alegor\u00edas c\u00edvicas de la \u00e9poca, sosteniendo en su mano derecha una espada y con la izquierda alza el pabell\u00f3n nacional.\\r\\n\\r\\n\u00a1No te pierdas!<\/strong>\\r\\n

\\\"\\\"<\/h3>\\r\\nComplejo Cultural Politeama<\/strong>\\r\\n\\r\\nEl Complejo Cultural Politeama cumpli\u00f3 100 a\u00f1os y su denominaci\u00f3n hace referencia a que este espacio ha sido destinado hist\u00f3ricamente a diversos tipos de espect\u00e1culos como zarzuelas, representaciones teatrales, funciones de cine, bailes y hasta competencias de boxeo. Cuenta con dos tertulias y platea flanqueada por pasillos que componen la sala teatral \u201cAtahualpa del Cioppo\u201d.\u00a0Teatro Atahualpa del Cioppo. Reinaugurado en el a\u00f1o 2014 luego de varias reformas, es considerado el polo art\u00edstico de la ciudad y \u00e1mbito c\u00e9ntrico de realizaci\u00f3n de actividades culturales.\u00a0Contacto: 1828 Int. 1233\\r\\n

Ubicado en la plaza 18 de Julio de Canelones, es un monumento de estilo historicista \u00a0en homenaje al primer pabell\u00f3n nacional. Consiste en una figura femenina en postura vertical, con la cabeza erguida y expresi\u00f3n severa. Vestida con una t\u00fanica, sostiene una espada en la mano derecha y con la izquierda alza la bandera.<\/p>\\r\\n\u00a0\\r\\n\\r\\n<\/div>\\r\\n

\\\"\\\"<\/figure>\\r\\nGranja de los ni\u00f1os<\/strong>\\r\\n\\r\\nSe trata de un espacio interdisciplinario e interinstitucional y educativo, que buscar promover la producci\u00f3n responsable y una cultura de vida saludable, posicionando a la granja como un lugar de referencia en los paseos p\u00fablicos del \u00e1rea metropolitana.
